UNESCO ASPnet Vennskap Nord/Sør
Hello, Sweden! Here we come :)

Monday 31th - Field trip (geography).

1
The Principal of Saltdal upper secondary school, Mrs. Ingunn Michaelsen.

On the schedule for today was a field trip through Saltdal valley. The municipality of Saltdal has a lot of interesting views related to geology.
Appr. 400 million years ago this part of Scandinavia crashed into North-America, and this collision created an enormous mountain range called the Caledonian range. Although the mountain range has been broken down by erosion and weathering since then, we still find remnants of it all the way from northern Norway, through Scotland and northern England, as well as in North-America.
During the last 2-3 million years (the quarternary period) we have had several glacial stages up here, which makes Saltdal quite a gem for quarternary geologists. A significant part of our field trip has therefore been consentrated on phenomena caused by glacial and fluvioglacial erosion.
As this trip took us pretty close to the Swedish border, we decided to pay our neighbours in east a visit. The students really loved to cross the border - and thereby adding another country to their list of visited countries. The fact that there is no border control, police, passports etc. on the border between Sweden and Norway surprised some of our visitors. The Scandinavian countries have a very relaxed attitude to such formalities, which is definitely a nice thing.
After the field trip we had a real nice party at school, with splendid performance and lots of delicious food from Tanzania, Trinidad&Tobago and Norway.
